High Line, the Hanging Gardens of New York City
High Line is a city park which is a relatively new attraction for the city of New York, United States. Unlike the usual parks, the park is located not on the ground, but above (elevated).
City parks are taking place where the elevated railroad tracks that used to the New York Central Railroad (West Side Line).
Rail overpass was built after the previous track is above ground, but would cause congestion and a series of accidents. In 1934, it’s was first in operation, nearly fifty years until 1980. The growth of rail transportation in the United States lethargic when the explosion of a motor vehicle in the 1950s, which led to train services on the High Line is not as crowded as before.
In the end of 1980’s and 1990’s, a lot of discourse to undermine the rail overpass is because disturbing the residents around and useless. The rails were overgrown with weeds and unsightly. There is also a desire among the last train service reconnected, but more are opposed
End of 1999, a nonprofit organization called “Friends of the High Line” was formed by Joshua David and Robert Hammond, and aims to save the High Line from eviction and turn it into a hanging garden.
Mobilized public support and the success of this effort, marked by significant investment from the government of New York.
At present, the length of the park is 1.6 kilometers, 2.3 kilometers of the total length of the original tracks. It’s was built in several stages, starting from the south. Currently each segment has different attractions and design, although one theme.
In between there is a small stage to enjoy the background music street, in other segments there is an interesting water feature. In other segments also rail overpass will cut the building and we are under the building. However, this still leaves the designer garden weeds or wild plants are arranged in such a way that it becomes an accent that complements the design trend of industrialists.
What activities are appropriate here? Lots of it. Besides enjoying a walk in the morning or evening, you can listen to live music performances, sports or jogging, sit back, street, eating, playing with children, painting or drawing, photography hobby fulfilling and much more.
